The signs and symptoms of monkeypox are similar to smallpox but they are much milder. After about a 12 day incubation period the patient may be reporting nonspecific symptoms such as fever, headache, nausea, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and a general feeling of fatigue, or discomfort. Within 1-3 days a rash will begin on the face, or other body parts after the onset of fever. These lesions (pustules, papules) will go through several stages before crusting and ultimately falling off. The duration of monkeypox is roughly 2-4 weeks, and scaring from the lesions may be present. In Africa, the disease is fatal in 10% of those who contract it.
